Fan Zone:

Glasgow is proud to be one of 11 European host cities confirmed by UEFA for the EURO 2020 tournament. As part of EURO 2020, Hampden Park will stage four matches (14, 18, 22 and 29 June) and the Scottish Government has given approval for Glasgow Green to host a Fan Zone for the duration of the tournament (11 June – 11 July).  This approval is subject to ongoing assessment of event plans within the context of COVID restrictions in Glasgow. We appreciate that the ongoing restrictions in the city remain difficult for everyone and hope that the situation improves soon. In light of this, plans will continue for the Fan Zone at this time with the site build commencing shortly.

The EURO 2020 Host City Team (based within Glasgow Life) is responsible for planning and delivering the Glasgow Green Fan Zone. The team has been working with UEFA, the Scottish FA, the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council on plans to host the tournament in Glasgow. An application for a temporary public entertainment licence has been submitted to Glasgow City Council which requests permission to stage the Fan Zone 11 June – 11 July, 12:00 – 22:00hrs. In the latter knock-out stages of the tournament, some 20:00hrs kick-off matches may run into extra time and penalties, in which case the Fan Zone will remain open until the conclusion of the match (23:00hrs at the latest).

A festival atmosphere will be created in the Fan Zone with a programme of sporting and cultural activity supplementing the screening of all EURO 2020 matches. The Fan Zone will be situated in the area from the McLennan Arch to the People’s Palace/Winter Gardens (please refer to the shaded area in the map below). The swing park to the north of the site and the river path to the south of the site will remain open. Due to the timescales involved, the Section 11 consultation process which would ordinarily be undertaken for any closures of core paths over 6 days, has not been undertaken. The Host City team have, however, taken as many steps as possible to minimise disruption to residents and we can advise that the Clyde Walkway/NCR 75 will remain open for the full duration of the tournament.  In total, of the 528,485 sqm of park available, the Fan Zone will utilise 54,560 sqm. This equates to 10.3% of the park being closed. Due to the security protocols for the event, as well as COVID guidelines the event must adhere to, it has not been possible to identify opportunities within tournament time to open additional core pathways.

The build period will commence on 28 May 2021 with a phased closure of the event site. The event site is expected to start to reopen on 14 July 2021, with the full de-rig due to be completed by 19 July 2021. The Fan Zone will have a maximum spectator capacity of 3,000 per session (with two sessions per day) and will be fully ticketed. Tickets for all match sessions will be free of charge. On days when there are no matches, the Fan Zone will host a cultural programme including comedy nights, band nights and live entertainment. Details of the cultural programme will be announced shortly, including where ticket charges will apply for selected performances.

All event partners are committed to staging a safe event and providing a COVID secure environment for visitors to the Fan Zones, participants and the local community. Extensive planning has taken place with a programme of measures implemented to ensure the safety of everyone.  As part of this, the Fan Zone will be a largely seated venue and will be subject to physical distancing requirements. A significant stewarding operation will be in place to encourage and enforce compliance with all safety measures. Event plans will be assessed by partners against epidemiological conditions and COVID measures will continue to be monitored in the run up to and throughout the tournament to ensure they remain appropriate.

There will be no road closures as a result of the Fan Zone, however, a limited number of parking restrictions will be necessary. A small number of parking spaces will be suspended on the south side of Greendyke Street, between London Road and Charlotte Street.  This will occur from 16:00hrs on the 9 June to 10:00hrs on the 13 July 2021.

The Host City Team is committed to minimising any impact the Fan Zone may have on the local community and a number of measures have been put in place to support this:

  • Please contact  UEFAEURO2020@glasgow.gov.uk if you have any questions.
  • A dedicated phone number has been set up for local residents and businesses who may have questions during the event. The number is 07724 417 505.  This will be available from Monday 3 June until Friday 16 July. During the tournament (11 June – 11 July) the line will be open between the hours of 09:00 – 23:00hrs and at all other times will be open during office hours.
