Residents applaud police’s city centre crime crackdown

City centre residents have welcomed a boost to police numbers and a crackdown on illegal e-bikes.

At its latest meeting Merchant City and Trongate Community Council (MCTCC) was informed that up to a dozen extra officers had been recruited to work in central Glasgow.

Community Councillors had also been told by police that a score of e-bikes modified to go faster than the legal 15.5 miles per hour, had been confiscated  in a drive supported by representatives of the UK Home Office.

A dedicated team had also made many arrests in a drive to curb shoplifting.

A spokesman for MCTCC commented: “Police are often criticised for having inadequate resources and not doing enough to stamp out crime in the city centre. It is encouraging to hear reports of more bobbies on the beat and these recent successes. We commend local officers on the results of their efforts.’

He added: “The Community Council continues to believe that e-bikers delivering food, such as those working on behalf of Deliveroo and Just Eat, should be identifiable by wearing numbered tabards, bags or other markers so they can be traced if they are involved in an accident.

“We meet police regularly on behalf of local residents and look forward to learning of more successes in reducing the amount of crime and anti-social behaviour in the heart of Glasgow.”
