The public are to be given the opportunity to view proposals for an exciting new mixed-use development on the site of the former College Street Goods Yard, High Street, Glasgow.

Progressed by Get Living, the UK’s leading build-to-rent (BTR) operator, the current site has an existing planning permission for residential dating from December 2018.

However, there is a strong case to revisit the scheme, building on learning from the pandemic to create a more community focused mixed-use development that will be sustainable and resilient for residents and the local community and economy. Based on this, key improvements to the design and quality of the scheme can be made, also serving to reduce impacts on neighbouring residential.

The proposals for this new urban neighbourhood include commercial uses, BTR residential and student accommodation. BTR is a relatively new model for creating new homes in the UK, but it is very popular in Europe and America, representing an additional channel to meet housing needs.

All the properties are built for rent, not for sale. Residents are offered security of tenure through 3-year leases, with the flexibility of renting and have access to wider on-site amenities, such as gyms and workspaces, offering a more connected and healthier lifestyle than the traditional boundaries of rented homes.

The new urban neighbourhood will deliver much-needed accommodation to meet the demand to live in the heart of the city and is in a highly sustainable location, with excellent access to amenities and key transport links.

It is also now a truly intergenerational housing offer, attracting a mix of residents, including key workers, entrepreneurs, young professionals and students, and brings forward Get Living’s learnings from operating through the pandemic on the value and role of community in places where we live and work.

The scheme also boasts a range of accessible green spaces and public realm, providing a mix of amenity and open spaces for the community to enjoy. These are also accessible to those outwith the development and will form a natural bridge to link the High Street with the Merchant City, Calton and the wider East End.

Under Covid-guidance, the public will be able to view development proposals on the website: www.highstreetgoodsyard.scot with the opportunity to ask the development team questions and provide feedback at an online consultation event on Thursday 14th October 2021 between 2pm and 8pm.
